Over the last two weeks, we've done some important groundwork. Week 1, we introduced the CEO Reset and the 6 systems every business needs to scale. Week 2, we cleared the mental clutter, sorted our priorities, and built an ideal week designed to produce results—not just fill time. If you did the work, you should already be feeling a little more in control. This week, we go deeper. And in many ways, this is the most important email in the entire series. Because here's the uncomfortable truth no business owner wants to admit out loud - that they feel like they are incredibly busy going nowhere in particular. They're working hard, putting in the hours, managing their teams, serving their clients, handling their finances. But when I ask them "where is this business going?"
When you're deep in the day-to-day, thinking about destination feels like a luxury. Something you'll do when things slow down. But here's the problem: things never slow down. And without a destination, every decision becomes harder than it needs to be. Every priority is negotiable. Every distraction feels justified. A CEO without a destination isn't leading - they are reacting. Your Primary Job as a LeaderLet's reframe this - your primary job, as the owner of the business, is not to manage operations. It's not to keep clients happy, put out fires, or even build a great team (although all of those matter). Your primary job is to define a destination and reverse engineer the plan to get there. Everything else flows from that. Your marketing message, your hiring decisions, your product development, your financial targets All of it becomes clearer when you know where you're going. So today, we're going to do two things that will give your business more direction than most MBA business plans ever could. Step 1: Write Your One-Sentence MissionNot a corporate mission statement that sounds good on a wall and means nothing in practice. A real, working mission. One sentence. Something you and your team can use as a filter for decisions. Use this template: "We will achieve [X] by [Y] because [Z]."
Here's an example: "We will become the go-to business coaching resource for ambitious South African Business Owners by 2029 because every business owner deserves access to world-class frameworks, not just those with big budgets." That's it. One sentence. But notice how much it contains: direction, timeframe, and purpose. Your mission doesn't have to be perfect. It has to be honest and useful. You can refine it as you grow. Write yours now. Don't overthink it. Step 2: Set Your OKRsOnce you have your destination, you need milestones that tell you whether you're actually moving towards it. This is where OKRs come in. OKRs stands for Objectives and Key Results, and despite the corporate-sounding name, they're actually incredibly simple and practical. Here's how they work: Objective: A qualitative statement of direction. Where are you going? What does success feel like? This is inspirational, not measurable. Key Results: The measurable evidence that you're getting there. Numbers. Metrics. Things you can track week by week. Example: Objective: Build a marketing engine that generates consistent, qualified leads Key Result 1: Generate 50 new leads per month by end of Q2 See how the Objective gives you direction and the Key Results tell you whether you're actually moving? For this week, I want you to set 2 to 3 Objectives with 2 Key Results each. Keep it simple. Keep it honest. These should reflect where your business genuinely needs to go, not where you wish it was already. The Honest QuestionBefore you do this exercise, I want you to sit with one question: Are your current weekly activities actually moving you towards this destination? Because here's what usually happens when CEOs do this work for the first time: they write their mission, set their OKRs, and then look at how they spent last week. The gap between the two is often uncomfortable. BUT That gap is your roadmap. It tells you exactly what needs to change. Your Assignment This Week for CEO Strategy Hour1.
