A while back, I worked with a brilliant healthcare practice owner. Sound familiar? She said to me: “I’ve hired people to help… so why am I still the one doing everything?” It’s a question I hear all the time. And here’s the tough-love answer: You may have hired help… But if you’re still managing tasks instead of setting clear expectations, you’ll always be the fallback. The Invisible LineMost business owners think they’re delegating. But what they’re really doing is assigning tasks like:
Instead, effective leaders assign outcomes. ✅ “Make sure our next newsletter gets a 25% open rate.” Outcomes create ownership. A Quick Test:Ask your team this week: “What does success look like in your role this month?” If they hesitate or guess, it’s a sign they’re waiting for you to define everything. That’s not empowerment. That’s micromanagement disguised as leadership (and its exhausting for you and demotivating for them). Try This:Pick one team member who needs to take more ownership. Then book a check-in to review their approach. Coach, don’t control. They might surprise you. Let me be clear here - clarity in terms of communicating what success looks like is essential. If you have not created the systems and processes (like a product catalogue, pricing sheets, report templates, corporate identity guidelines or standard checks to be performed on a report...) then you are setting your employee up for failure and yourself for frustration. Coming Up Next Week:In the next week's Blog email, I’ll break down the actual business metrics I track with my clients—not just revenue, but the numbers that show whether your business is built for freedom or stress. Till then, have some fun being the coach and not every single member of the team. Regards Anne Gray PS. When you are ready, here are a few ways we can work together:

It's been a while - I know. I pretty much disappeared in the second half of 2025. I got sucked into building someone else’s business. What started as a one-day-a-week gig turned into an every-available-minute gig… and somewhere in that blur, I lost sight of what I was building. Has that ever happened to you? "Keep the main thing the main thing" Last year, I put this sticky note on my windowsill — right in my line of sight — so I couldn’t miss it. The idea was simple: every time an opportunity...
Happy New Year! Welcome back to your inbox. But don't be tempted back into bad habits. Lets start the year differently. This week - the first week back - allow me to suggest that it's not about hitting the ground running. It’s about something quieter, and far more powerful: setting up the deliberate practice you promised yourself. A gentle ease-in. The start of your healthy rhythms. At the end of last year, during the G20, a friend of a friend relayed a story from someone working on the...
The Solutioneers Blog June 15th Strategic Goal Setting Series: Week2 Align & Connect: “Why doesn’t anyone get it?” Hello again, Reader 👋 Once upon a time, I managed my first software project... I had a complicated diagram on a whiteboard, a meeting with the sales team of the delivery partner, where I waved my hands and described my exciting vision. They got excited about my vision and made promises on behalf of their technical team. I hired a project manager and defined project milestones who...
